Description
This group is taken from Ancestry.com which describes it as: “The Gulf Coast and Lower Mississippi Valley has a rich history. Originally, Native American groups like the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek dominated the area. The climate, water access, and fertile soil enticed Scots-Irish farmers from the Carolinas to grow cotton and sugar. Their entry pushed Indigenous Peoples farther west and drastically increased the number of enslaved Africans to work plantations. By the turn of the 20th century, new opportunities in oil, lumber, and shipbuilding helped develop towns and larger cities in this culturally and socially diverse region.”
